Embark on a historical wine journey through the heart of Georgia’s most important wine region, Kakheti. We’ll have an early start from Tbilisi, leaving the city behind for vineyards, qvevri, tradition and fantastic wine and food. Our first stop will be at the Alaverdi Monastery, where monks have been making traditional wines in qvevri since 1011 ad. We will visit the church and winemaking facilities followed by a tasting of their exquisite wines and local products including their homemade matsoni (yogurt) made from buffalo milk. After our visit to the monastery we will visit a charming craftsman whose family has been making qvevri for generations. There are now only four producers of qvevri in Georgia, and so we will have the opportunity to learn about this ancient tradition that is now recognized by UNESCO as protected intangible cultural heritage. We will learn the qvevri making process followed by a toast (or two) made by our host. Our final visit will be to an eclectic guest house in Kakheti with stunning views, a pool for warm days and one ofGeorgia’s most welcoming hosts. We’ll enjoy a festive Georgian meal with demonstrations on khinkali and churchkela preparations as well as a winery visit, tasting of the wines with food and ending with a toast with chacha before our journey back to Tbilisi.
